What is collaborative law?

When divorcing spouses commit to a collaborative law approach, they agree that they will try to resolve all issues — child custody, property division, alimony, the works outside of the courthouse— through negotiation and agreement. Collaborative law is  a goal-oreinted process which helsp the parties creatively solve their issue and often results in win-win solutions and improved communications between the parties, which is particularly beneficial if minor children are involved.  If theparties can't follow through on this commitment, each spouse needs to hire a new "litigation" lawyer.  The expense involved in retaining new counsel by itself provides a powerful incentive to make collaborative law work, and it usually does.
